Three years ago, in 2021, I saw a couple of spiders on my deck. I had only been in Georgia 5 years, and was still discovering how different the wildlife is from my life in the Chicago area. Always fascinated by insects and spiders, I looked it up, and it led me to learning that it was a Joro Spider.
It’s an immigrant from Japan, as far as researchers can tell, having hitchhiked on a shipping container. It Found this area hospitable, and has been extending its range ever since. Researchers are still trying to ascertain the limits of that range, but so far, its moved from the northern Atlanta metro area to the adjacent states.
I took some pictures, started a fan website, and found that there was a lot of interest. I learned more and gained some expertise, and I also learned that there was a lot of misinformation going on out there as well. So my fan website has been converted to an informational one.
I added other social media, like Instagram and Facebook, hoping to reduce the fear and highlight the beauty in the midst of education.
To my surprise, the photos I shared quickly gained traction. Major media outlets took notice, and before I knew it, my images were being featured across the internet. I’ve been fortunate to have my work showcased by the Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, USA Today, and many others. These opportunities have not only expanded my reach but also connected me with a global community of nature enthusiasts, photographers, and fellow creatives.
As my passion for the Joro spider deepened, I felt compelled to create something tangible—something that could bring the same sense of wonder and joy to others. That’s how “The Joro Spider Journal: The Blue Book” came to life. This book is more than just a collection of photographs; it’s a celebration of nature’s beauty and the creative spirit. Within its pages, you’ll find 50 carefully curated photos of the Joro spider, each paired with a quote meant to inspire and uplift. It’s designed for those who love nature, journaling, or simply appreciating the small, intricate wonders of the world around us.
When you purchase “The Joro Spider Journal,” you’re not just buying a book—you’re joining me on this journey. You’re helping to spread the joy of creation, and supporting my ongoing work as I continue to explore and document the world of the Joro spider.
I’m incredibly grateful for the past three years and for everyone who has supported this project along the way. From the early followers on Instagram to the readers who’ve embraced the book, each of you has played a part in making this journey possible. As I look to the future, I’m excited to see where this path leads next.
Thank you for being a part of this adventure. Here’s to many more years of curiosity, creativity, and connection.
